UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science is known for creating research-based, high-quality science curriculum programs such as Amplify Science. We believe in building instructional leaders’ capacity by providing professional learning experiences that are curriculum-specific and linked to a community of job-alike peers. Our professional learning offerings support districts’ strategic and sustainable plans for equitable science teaching and learning, and strengthen a districts’ curriculum implementation.

What are these phases?

These phases refer to the distinct areas of support (adoption, launch, ongoing for teachers, ongoing for leaders) that PL partners provide to schools and school systems to support curriculum adoption and implementation.

Adoption: Services to help educators review and purchase a new curriculum.

Launch: Initial training for teachers and school leaders after they purchase a new curriculum on how to use it to support student learning.

Ongoing for teachers: Ongoing support and coaching for teachers focused on effective use of their curriculum.

System design and leadership support: Supports school system leaders with the enabling conditions and resources required for a successful implementation of the HQIM.

Rivet defines HQIM in ELA, Math, and Science as those rated ‘Meets Expectations’ on EdReports in all grade levels for their grade band (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12).

If your curriculum is not listed, then it does not meet these criteria or has not been reviewed to date.

As a partner who exclusively supports the adoption phase of curriculum, Rivet does not evaluate their expertise in any particular high-quality instructional materials.

What does this certification mean?

EL Education has partnered with select professional learning providers through a philanthropically-funded pilot certification program designed to build knowledge around the content, structure, and intent of the EL Education K-5 Language Arts curriculum. In the final phase of the program, participants from each partner organization demonstrated expertise in facilitating curriculum-aligned professional learning in a real-world context.

Illustrative Mathematics: Professional Learning certified by Illustrative Mathematics is delivered through our IM Certified Facilitators, who undergo a rigorous qualification and training process to gain mastery in delivering impactful professional learning experiences based on the author’s intent. IM Certified Facilitators deliver learning educators need, in a variety of formats, including onsite academies and live virtual classrooms.

Open Up Resources (OUR) vets professional learning partners to guarantee OUR customers receive the highest quality professional learning. The vetting process includes a comprehensive certification process that ensures professional learning providers are OUR curricula experts with the experience necessary to provide professional learning that leads to efficacious implementation of OUR curricula.

OpenSciEd is growing a community of certified professional learning providers. OpenSciEd-Certified organizations include partners who helped to develop the materials and professional learning as well as organizations newer to OpenSciEd who have demonstrated deep understanding of the professional learning goals and pedagogy. Certified organizations collaborate and learn from each other in an online community as they work together to meet the unique needs of teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, and district leaders to revolutionize classrooms with OpenSciEd’s materials.

What are these sample scopes of work?

Each provider in the PLPG provides a sample scope of work for each type of professional learning they are approved for. The scopes of work represent engagements with actual clients and are intended to give users a better understanding of how the provider engages with teachers and leaders in each type of professional learning.

What are these scopes?
How we address equity
The Lawrence is dedicated to leadership, innovation and excellence in STEM education and professional learning, and has a long history of addressing the needs of groups who are situated at the margins of high-quality STEM education and HQIM implementation. This includes experiential, ongoing, collaborative PL for leaders and teacher leaders to assist with learning and increasing student engagement through contextualized STEM experiences within HQIM. These capacities include vision, knowledge of current realities, distributed leadership, district policies and priorities, supportive context, and clear definition of equity for STEM learning where specific student groups are named to provide explicit and targeted support.
Why is this important?

High-quality professional learning supports teachers in effectively engaging all students in rigorous tasks, including students with unfinished learning, students learning English, and students with special needs.

Implicit racism plays a major role in perpetuating achievement gaps in classrooms across the country. Rivet is committed to dismantling racism by connecting educators with professional learning partners who confront implicit racism through culturally responsive services that support teachers in providing high quality instruction to all students every day.

Why is this important?
How we build district capacity
The Lawrence provides support for equity-driven HQIM implementation through systems-level capacity building for science through attention to key dimensions of systems capacity building and organizational change. We support organizations to develop their capacity to design policies, plans and learning supports to build and sustain a high quality, equitable, district-wide science program that supports the HQIM implementation. We support districts to implement science HQIM as a widely accepted district-wide priority among teachers, site leaders, partners and families, and design specifically for students situated at the margins within the district.

It is important for PL providers to have a gradual release plan with the schools and districts they work with. This response highlights how this provider builds capacity within a school system to effectively support the implementation of high-quality curriculum.

How we provide curriculum-aligned PL

Workshops

A suite of supports that engage leaders in addressing key drivers, such as setting a coherent K-12 Science vision across the district. Workshops are always in support of a broader HQIM implementation vision and plan, and are part of a constellation of ongoing inputs, facilitation, and participant planning and reflection.

Coaching

A key feature of our coaching is that it addresses the specific individual needs expressed by state leaders and agencies, university faculty and staff, districts and schools, community-based organizations, and others for the purpose of prioritizing equity-driven, HQIM implementation and related outcomes.

PLCs

Collaborative structures, processes, and connections through support to district teams that reflect key stakeholders in the community, district, and broader support system (e.g., regional entities, local community colleges, community-based organizations, etc.), to build support for HQIM implementation and movement towards equity-driven, high-quality STEM education opportunities for learners.

Consultations

We consult to address yearly priorities, milestones, needs, and challenges related to systems level HQIM implementation. Consultation serves to deepen the conversation around equitable plans and practices across the district with an emphasis on utilizing available research data to uncover areas of implementation challenge and to systematically remove barriers.
