Sample scopes of work
What are these scopes?
How we address equity
BSCS is committed to science learning that is inclusive, meaningful, and advances social and environmental justice. Two equity goals drive our current work: to include and elevate knowledge, experience, and voices from marginalized communities; and to provide equitable and meaningful opportunities for students from marginalized communities to learn science. Our programs develop teachers who can identify potential barriers to learning, capable of adapting our materials to be accessible to all students, and who respect the variety of ways in which students engage in sense-making and express their ideas.
Why is this important?
How we build district capacity
BSCS works with local leaders to develop internal capacity to support the effective use of OpenSciEd. These leaders continue to support teacher learning long after the professional learning program has ended. Our practice is to develop sustained relationships with the teachers and leaders we work with to develop productive organizational partnerships. These relationships are continually fostered and supported through interactions at national and regional conferences and invitations to future program offerings.
Why is this important?
How we provide curriculum-aligned PL

Workshops

Workshops are used for small learning goals delivered over a brief period of time, 1-3 hours. BSCS uses workshops to introduce programs for consideration such as NextGenTIME, that may be implemented on their own using free online resources, with direct support from BSCS or through a combination of both approaches.

Coaching

Coaching is an opportunity for educators to reflect on their own practice. A coach can make a teacher’s goals, beliefs and assumptions about their practice visible through probing and reflective dialogue. This is an effective tool for refining teaching practices. Coaching is often integrated into a larger professional development program.

PLCs

A key feature of many BSCS professional learning programs are PLCs that support teacher learning of new curriculum and strategies through a video-based lesson analysis approach. In small teams, teachers analyze videos and student work from their own classrooms and reflect on how they can improve their practice.

Consultations

BSCS offers consulting services to school sites, districts and states in order to strengthen their capacity for system change, promote the adoption and implementation of high quality standards-designed instructional materials, and promote the development of effective professional learning systems for science.
