How are partners selected for the PL Partner Guide?
Who we are
In OpenSciEd classrooms, students learn science through discovery. Developed by leading science researchers and educators, our instructional model is designed to align with how students learn best. Our curriculum is phenomena-based and centers student-led questioning, investigating, and problem-solving, with teachers supporting students as learning facilitators, rather than lecturers. This approach fosters a classroom culture where everyone matters and is heard, building unique skills for educators and students, and empowering them in their education journey.

Sample scopes of work
What are these scopes?
How we address equity
OpenSciEd’s professional learning is designed to establish an equitable learning environment for adults that models the shifts in teaching and learning embedded in the classroom materials and prepares teachers to create these learning environments in their own classrooms. This includes a focus on equitable science sensemaking which we define as noticing, leveraging, and supporting student resources as the classroom works together to build scientific understandings about problems and phenomena. During the professional learning participants reflect and respond to the students in their classrooms to support the use of culturally and linguistically sustaining instructional practices.
Why is this important?
How we build district capacity
OpenSciEd offers multiple entry points to deliver professional learning in-tandem with HQIM implementation. OpenSciEd offers a train-the-trainer model to prepare additional facilitators at the school, district, and organizational levels. Each professional learning course has an option of additional facilitator specific preparation. In addition to synchronous professional learning, facilitators can increase their OpenSciEd facilitation skills through asynchronous micro-credentialing courses.
Why is this important?
How we provide curriculum-aligned PL

Workshops

Implementing instructional materials that demand a paradigm shift in instruction for teachers is a multi-year effort. Whether materials are implemented in a unit-replacement strategy, or all in one year, OpenSciEd has 14 days of professional learning to support implementation.

Coaching

PLCs

OpenSciEd utilizes a collaborative planning structure through Basecamp throughout the process of facilitating professional learning with school districts. While working with schools and teachers, OpenSciEd provides ongoing options to support teachers in areas unique to their context. These often include guided planning and reflection in a virtual synchronous format.

Consultations

LEA’s can contact OpenSciEd to co-plan professional learning support aimed at meeting their staff where they are at, with the goal of moving them forward. We provide learning experiences that accommodate your preferred learning format and systems of support for continued learning in a community of collaborative educators.
