WHO WE ARE
The MQI Coaching model uses an evidence-based observational instrument, the Mathematical Quality of Instruction (MQI) rubric, as a lens for critically analyzing math instruction. Using classroom video and the MQI rubric in one-on-one coaching cycles, teachers self-identify areas for instructional growth and commit to realistic action steps. MQI Coaching was developed and tested as part of a research study and revealed that participation significantly improved the quality of math instruction and increased teacher retention.

What is a high quality curriculum?

How we address equity
MQI Coaching supports equity by ensuring historically marginalized students have the opportunity to deeply engage in high-quality, grade-appropriate math instruction. MQI Coaching supports teachers in implementing curriculum tasks as intended in ways that keeps the cognitive demand on the students, rather than the teacher. In particular, several codes of the MQI rubric provide specific criteria for defining high-quality student engagement across a range of practices. This enables teachers to reflect on their own practice and generate ideas on how to improve their teaching to better support their students.
Why is this important?
How we build district capacity
MQI Coaching provides individualized, ongoing support for teachers – allowing teachers to work toward their own goals and to implement curriculum with fidelity. Our coaching model is teacher-driven, focused on teachers’ own instruction, and utilizes an objective, evidence-based math-specific tool for reflection. Over time, teachers internalize the MQI codes, allowing them not only to reflect with their coach but to plan and enact future lessons with the codes in mind, allowing them to independently elevate their implementation of the curriculum. Engaging in MQI Coaching has been shown to increase teacher retention and improve the quality of math instruction.
