How we address equity
At Teaching Matters we envision a nation where every student has equitable access to excellent teaching. Our mission is to close the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system for underserved and historically marginalized children. We are committed to pursuing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all our work. By developing our own critical consciousness and examining and confronting our biases, we demonstrate our commitment to pursuing an equitable and inclusive organization and building those values and skills in our team, practices, and policies. Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE) anchors all of our professional development and partnerships with districts and schools.
Why is this important?
How we build district capacity
Highly successful curriculum adoption is characterized by three features: Compelling vision, process clarity, and trusting partnerships among stakeholders. We believe in structured collaboration at all levels of the system, including central leadership, district leadership, and school-based teams. District level collaboration will include district level planning in order to differentiate support based on each school’s strengths and areas of growth. Throughout the partnership, we will also support district level data analysis and reflection in order to monitor progress of curriculum adoption and its impact on teacher practice and student learning. Additionally, we will offer professional learning sessions that serve to socialize high expectations, review feedback, reinforce a common language of instruction, review data and student work products, and set collaborative next steps to achieve shared goals.
Why is this important?
How we provide curriculum-aligned PL

Workshops

Teaching Matters designs workshops that actively engage teachers in learning the content, pedagogy, assessment practices, and planning tools necessary for effective implementation of a high quality curriculum. Workshops are designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to immediately apply what they have learned to improve practice.

Coaching

Curriculum-aligned coaching cycles with teachers are interconnected, sequential, goal-driven, and designed for school-specific contexts to guide internalization of content, implementation of the HQIM. Coaching cycles include opportunities for teachers to learn and implement new practices through professional development sessions, model lessons, and cycles of observation and feedback.

PLCs

Teaching Matters builds capacity at your school or district to sustain impactful professional learning by fostering collaboration and developing teachers to lead high-functioning professional learning communities (PLCs). We support PLCs to engage in disciplined inquiry, to foster continuous improvement of HQIM implementation, in alignment with professional learning goals.

Consultations

Teaching Matters consults directly with school leaders to support implementation of high quality instructional materials. We begin with a comprehensive needs assessment, resulting in a common understanding of student achievement and the most pressing needs for students and teachers. Then, we craft detailed action plans aligned with the identified needs.
